This month, we’re featuring Craig Meddin, Founder and CEO of Postal Solutions. With more than 25 years in the industry, Craig has built a business centered on helping properties simplify mail and package management, not just with technology, but with the right systems behind it.

How did you get started in this industry, and what’s kept you here?

Postal Solutions was founded in 2000. I was a student government rep fighting the idea that the postal service wasn’t going to put mail and packages in the mailbox at student housing properties. That’s really where everything started.

We created, from the back of a napkin on an airplane trip, our own package logging software and had it developed. It ran for eight years. We found Luxer One in 2015 and here we are a decade later.

At the end of this month will be the beginning of our 11th year. We’ll wrap up our first decade of selling Luxer One! We’ve sold over 1,200 systems now. What’s kept me here is how much the industry has evolved. It’s not the same problem it was 20 years ago. Now it’s packages, logistics, and operations at scale, and there’s always something new to figure out.

What do you enjoy most about the work you do?

I enjoy solving problems and helping properties run better. When you can take something that’s frustrating for both staff and residents and turn it into a smooth process, that’s really rewarding.

That kind of care is what we celebrate the most. You’re not just getting one person, you’re getting a whole team of people dedicated to making this the best possible experience.

Is there anything that you specialize in today?

We really specialize in making package systems actually work operationally. The lockers and software are important, but what we focus on is how everything works together. A lot of companies sell lockers. We focus on the whole package ecosystem: lockers, package rooms, overflow, daily management, weekly audits, you name it.

What changes or trends are you seeing most often in your industry right now?

The biggest one is volume. Packages have increased a lot, especially after the pandemic, and that’s changed expectations.

Residents expect an Amazon-like experience. What other services are people tracking in their life that closely? People want to know where their package is, and when they’re going to get it.

What challenges are customers coming to you with more frequently than they did a few years ago?

10 years ago, I would say packages were a small amenity issue. But today, there’s a core operational challenge. It’s really around capacity and staffing. Properties are getting more packages than they were designed for, and they don’t have the staff to manage it manually.

Leasing teams are spending hours and hours managing deliveries. So what used to be manageable has turned into a daily operational issue.

Where do you see the industry heading in the next few years?

Package volume isn’t going away, it’s only going to keep growing.

Because of that, automation is becoming standard. New developments are planning for it from the building stage, and existing properties are continuing to realize they need to solve the need, for both their operational burden and resident friction at pick-up.

What should property managers prioritize now to stay ahead?

It’s easy to focus on installing lockers, but the bigger question is how everything works together, how packages are managed, how residents access them, and how much time staff are spending managing it.


There’s a perception with some properties that don’t want to pay for smart lockers because they’re already paying staff. If your staff is working on packages, they’re not on a tour, they’re not calling to follow up with potential tenants. It’s not free.

Packages aren’t always about packages. They’re about time, workflow, and removing friction for the resident and staff.

That’s the real cost of “free” package management. At the end of the day, packages aren’t always about packages. They’re about time, workflow, and removing friction for the resident and the staff. When the friction between all of those is gone, the entire property operates better.
