Preparing Smart Lockers for Storms: Keep Your System Running in Any Weather

Storm season can bring more than just rain! Hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, and sudden temperature swings can all threaten your property’s operations. When the weather turns dangerous, the last thing property managers should worry about is whether their smart lockers will fail.

Your package management systems should be built to withstand the toughest conditions. One of our priorities at Luxer One is building systems that last through any conditions. To help prepare you for the inclement weather that hurricane season may bring, we’ve compiled some tips and tricks to ensure your systems are running when it matters most.

Tip #1: Protect Outdoor Lockers from Heavy Rain and Flooding

When preparing smart lockers for storms, water management is key. Luxer One outdoor units are built with multiple protective features, including:

  • Roofing units to block direct rain.

  • Tilted shelves and rain lips to keep water from pooling inside compartments.

  • Precision installation to ensure long-term stability and protection.

If your lockers are in an exposed area, consider adding additional cover or barriers before a major storm hits to help prevent wind-driven rain from reaching the electronics. Expecting a snowstorm? Be sure to salt the walkway or even lay a tarp in front of the unit to be sure it is accessible when it’s safe.

Tip #2: Manage Temperature Extremes

Severe weather can bring sudden heat waves or freezing temperatures, either of which can affect sensitive electronics. Luxer One lockers use Thermal Electric Cooler (TEC) units to keep our iPad-based operating screens at a stable temperature year-round:

  • In summer, TEC units prevent overheating.
  • In winter, they keep screens from freezing.

If your TEC unit has a switch, your maintenance team can change the setting seasonally with minimal effort. If it doesn’t, our technical support team is just a call away to make sure your unit is ready for the next temperature shift.

Tip #3: Prepare for Power Outages

Storms and outages go hand-in-hand. Every Luxer One locker is equipped with an APC battery backup that provides up to two hours of power when electricity goes down. These backups also protect against power surges, keeping your system safe as power is restored.

If your internet connection is interrupted, the lockers switch to Bluetooth mode, so carriers can continue delivering and residents can still pick up packages. Residents simply open the Luxer One mobile app and tap the “Open Locker Door” button when within range of the unit. Notifications will be sent once the internet is restored.

Why Choose Luxer One for Reliability

Even the best storm prep tips mean more when you know your system is built to endure. Luxer One lockers are engineered to perform in the harshest conditions, and we have the proof to back it up.

When a tornado ripped through a Home Depot in Texas, the entire building was destroyed. Once the storm passed, the only thing still standing was a set of Luxer One smart lockers. Thankfully, everyone had evacuated safely earlier that day, but the lockers’ survival says everything about their durability.

In addition to sturdy construction, our regional support managers and responsive technical team are here to help you before, during, and after severe weather. Whether it’s adjusting TEC settings, performing pre-storm checks, or troubleshooting after an outage, our team helps to ensure your package management stays up and running.

If you’re not yet a Luxer One customer, now’s the time to choose a partner that’s proven to last through storms, outages, and everything in between.
